چکیده

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the dynamic (ac) Stark effect on a forbidden transition. A general framework for parameterizing and describing off-resonant ac-Stark shifts is presented. A model is developed to calculate spectral line shapes resulting from resonant excitation of atoms in an intense standing light-wave in the presence of off-resonant ac-Stark shifts. The model is used in the analysis and interpretation of a measurement of the ac-Stark shifts of the static-electric-field-induced 6s 1S0 → 5d6s 3D1 transition at 408 nm in atomic Yb. The results are in agreement with estimates of the ac-Stark shift of the transition under the assumption that the shift is dominated by that of the 6s 1 S0 ground state. A detailed description of the experiment and analysis is presented. A bi-product of this work is an independent determination (from the saturation behavior of the 408-nm transition) of the Stark transition polarizability, which is found to be in agreement with our earlier measurement. This work is part of the ongoing effort aimed at a precision measurement of atomic parity-violation effects in Yb.

Temperature dependent photoemission spectroscopy in Li0.9Mo6O17 contributes to evidence for one dimensional physics that is unusually robust. Three generic characteristics of the Luttinger liquid are observed, power law behavior of the k-integrated spectral function down to temperatures just above the superconducting transition, k-resolved lineshapes that show holon and spinon features, and qua...

The bulk-sensitive Ce 4f spectral weights of various Ce compounds including CeFe2, CeNi2, and CeSi2 were obtained with the resonant photoemission technique at the Ce 3d-edge. We found the lineshapes change significantly with the small change of the incident photon energy. Detailed analysis showed that this phenomenon results primarily from the Auger transition between

Note: Multi-point measurement of |B| in the gas-dynamic trap with a spectral motional Stark effect diagnostic.

An upgraded spectral motional Stark effect diagnostic has been installed on the gas-dynamic trap (GDT) experiment to enable spatially resolved measurement of |B|. A new low-noise charge-coupled device detector, combined with enhancements of the diagnostic neutral beam, allows single-shot profile measurements. Previously only single-point motional Stark effect measurements were possible, and det...

Non-thermal Effects in Stark Broadening*

When an atom is immersed in a plasma the energy levels are broadened and shifted by the interaction with the fluctuating electric field of the plasma. We discuss the effect of this field on the spectral line shape by the use of results from plasma kinetic theory. In particular we show that in the equilibrium plasma the dominant effect is from single-particle collisions although correlation effe...
